Opening on April 4, 2012 the Kent Island Federation of Arts is exhibiting Functional Art; Useful Art of Our Times. The call for artists went out for creations that could be “sat on, filled, walked on, worn, or eaten and drunk from”. The challenge is a spin off from the 2011 Recycled show where area artists stretched the imagination and came up with unique and compelling two and three dimensional ‘upcycled materials’ art.
Local fiber artist and basket weaver Heidi Wetzel weaves large and small vessels from found objects such as driftwood and discarded telephone wire. She attributes a good deal of her design inspiration from recycled materials. Wetzel, whose studio is located in Easton, MD, works predominantly with natural fibers, but has been known to create some unusual pieces from items found in her travels.
The late Dotti Heimert, one of our areas most imaginative and creative assemblage artists, used architectural elements and found objects in her popular and collectible art. KIFA was very lucky to have had the opportunity to exhibit Dotti’s Angel #74 in the 2011 exhibit.
Functional Art, an exhibit of artists of all ages, runs through April 28. The public is welcome to the KIFA Gallery every Wednesday through Saturday from 1 – 4 pm. Join us for an Artist Reception on Saturday, April 7 from 3-5 pm. Come see the show and meet the participating artists while enjoying light refreshments.
