The world premiere performance, which showcases the talents of the state of Maryland’s only professional ballet company, will open the third weekend of this month—October 21st–23rd at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis.
Cuatto, who choreographed the ballet and created the score, drew from the works of two Russian composers, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. Approximately 90 minutes long, she started with Rimsky- Korsakov’s Scherherazade and Borodin’s Prince Igor and then found additional music in Rimsky- Korsakov’s suite from the Tale of Tsar Tsalton and the Golden Cockerel as well as Borodin’s Symphony No 2 in B minor. “Mystery, magic, romance, special effects, and spectacular dancing will abound,” says Cuatto, “in this new interpretation made from studying the various versions of Aladdin. As in the Disney version, BTM’s version of this tale will be set against the backdrop of Arabian Nights rather than in China, where it was set in the original story.”
Featured performers are BTM principal dancers Joshua Burnham as Aladdin and Meagan Helman as headstrong Princess Samira. Nicole Seitz will portray the Sorceress of the Ring of Power and Calder Taylor the Genie from the Lamp of Wonders. Approximately 40 dancers will participate in the production.
An exciting season is planned by BTM for 2011–2012. The Nutcracker, a holiday favorite will be performed for two weeks in December followed by two one-act ballets, The Scarlet Letter & The Firebird, in February. The season closes with Director’s Choice in April, a mixed bill performance featuring Reflections on Grace, a work celebrating the 100th birthday of famed Denishawn dancer and Annapolis native, Grace Clark.
