Kicking off the 2011–2012 season this month with The Unexpected Guest, an English murder mystery. Colonial Players plans to offer a variety of entertainment including three comedies, two musicals, and, two dramas.
Founded by a group of theater-loving Annapolitans, CPA put on its first production The Male Animal, in 1949. In 1955, CPA purchased an old car repair shop on East Street and through the years they have transformed the shop into a 180-seat venue.
“Since the 1950s we have been performing at our location on East Street. A few years after we bought the location, we bought the building next door and combined the two, this allowed for a bigger space,” says Marketing Director Beth Terranova. “We are the only theater-in-the-round in this area, and it really sets us apart from other community theaters.”
A founding member of the Annapolis Consortium of Theaters, this all-volunteer theater put the focus on giving back to the community by providing scholarships, workshops, and forums, while increasing their theatrical offerings.
“Beginning in 1949, we were only doing about three shows each season, but now we are up to about seven shows,” says Terranova.
“We like to have a variety of productions, from dramas to comedies, that are both award-winning and shows that are less known,” says Terranova. “This season our shows are varied. We have murder, musicals, and comedies. Our production of Little Women in November is a great show to ing the whole family to. But our production Cinderella Waltz is not meant for little ones because it's not your grandma's fairytale.”
