Back in February, the nation’s beloved groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring. Well, that day has finally arrived! The official spring equinox was yesterday, so here are a few ways you can celebrate this weekend.
Go green. What better way to celebrate spring than by celebrating our planet? Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville is hosting the Davidsonville Green Expo, presented by Davidsonville Area Civic Association (DACA), on Saturday, March 23rd, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about environmentally-friendly products, water conservation and preservation, recycling, lawn and garden techniques, and more. Kids can have their faces painted by members of Southern High School’s art department, as well as meet some of Homestead’s barnyard animals. Beards Creek BBQ will be on site serving BBQ sandwiches, sides, beverages, and more. For more information, visit Homesteadgardens.com.
Support local businesses and artists. Head over to Glen Burnie High School for its spring craft fair on Saturday, March 23rd, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. There will be over 140 vendors selling handmade, one-of-a-kind crafts and treats, including glassware, baked goods, woodwork, clothing, and much more. The craft fair is sponsored by Glen Burnie’s music program and members of the Band Parents Association. All proceeds benefit various school music programs. Visit gbhsmusic.org for more information.
If you want to get your shopping started a little earlier this weekend, take a trip to downtown Denton tonight, March 21st, for Third Thursday. From 5–7 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month, local downtown businesses and restaurants offer extended hours and specials. For more information, visit Visitcaroline.org.
Bask in the sun. The weather forecast calls for a beautiful weekend, so get outside! Visit your favorite local park for some R&R, or even head over to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and enjoy some lacrosse as you relax in the stands. On Saturday, March 23rd, the men’s team plays Lehigh at noon, and the women’s team takes on Bucknell at 3 p.m. Ticket prices vary for the men’s game and is free for the women’s game. Flower power. Spring is often associated with flowers and trees, so enjoy both together. The 2019 National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. began yesterday, so take a day trip to our nation’s capital for the celebration. If you can’t make it this weekend, don’t sweat it! The festival is happening through Sunday, April 14th. For more information, visit Nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.
Gear up for the great outdoors. Boating season is quickly approaching, so be prepared for your next outing. The MD Sportsman Show is happening this Friday, March 22nd through Sunday, March 24th at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship. Packed with over 100 vendors, attendees will enjoy deals on hunting and fishing gear, clothing, boats, ATVs, RVs, trucks, and more. Check out seminars and demonstrations from top outdoor experts, and even participate in a waterfowl calling contest or a cornhole tournament. Festival hours are Friday, 2–7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tickets are $8 for one-day access for guests 12 and older, and free for children 11 and under.
