For more than a decade Artworks Studio (306 Park Row, Chestertown) has hosted a self-guided Artist Studio Tour throughout Kent County that showcases the works and workspaces of more than 50 professional artists. This year the free tour has been extended from October and is continuing on November 5th and 6th.
“Some artists, like myself, actually open up their homes so people can see other artwork and how they live. For me, the main goal [of the tour] is to expose the public to a variety of art forms, media, and style,” says artist Cindy Bowers Fulton, who has also served as either chairman or co-chairman of the Artist Studio Tour for the past eight years.
Attendees are encouraged to walk, weave, and wander at their own pace among the many sights on display. Artworks Studio suggests starting at its gallery to view examples of each artist's work and grab a ochure/map that will aid in navigating the tour. The artist studios and galleries are sprinkled throughout scenic Worton, Rock Hall, Chestertown, and more quaint towns of Kent County. Plan for a day of sightseeing as the tour runs 10 a.m.–5 p.m., rain or shine. And when your eyes need a eak you could enjoy one of three planned meals, like a box lunch and beverage at Still Pond Station, lunch at the Historic Emmanuel Church, or wine with hors d'oeuvres at Osprey Point Inn—remember, reservations only.

Part of the tour's allure—and a major factor for its success—is the diversity of artists and styles that are present. Attendees can expect everything from painting, photography, sculpture, metal work, pottery, fiber, woodcraft, jewelry, furniture, glass, and more. Original works can be purchased at studio prices, though the priceless part of this event is meeting and speaking with the artists themselves.
“Kent County is beautiful. We have varied landscapes with hills, deep ravines, bay and creek scenes, farm scenes, forests, and quaint towns. This all attracts artists in addition to the peaceful atmosphere in which they like to work,” says Fulton.
