During a recent doctor visit, I made the unfortunate discovery that I put on about ten pounds of what I’ll call “cake, ice cream and beer” weight over the winter months. Though I’m not the typical girly girl, I do have my insecurities about the looming bikini season. This got me thinking that on top of hashing, I should do some workouts that don’t involve a happy hour afterwards, especially since I have a 10-mile run coming up in almost exactly 30 days. It also got me thinking about some fitness events that are coming up this weekend in Annapolis and on the Shore.
For the Somewhat Motivated
If you’re already jazzed about getting in shape, head to the Severna Park Community Center on Saturday from 10 to 3 for the Heartbeat for Health event. You can decide what type of exercise you wanna do by seeing yoga, Zumba, hip hop and belly dancing demonstrations. If you’re a smoker, learn how to quit – and sample healthy snacks that you can munch on instead. These are thoughtfully offered by Deliciously Nutritious. No need to register. Just show up.
For the Hardly Motivated
Need a little extra push? Head to Get Movin’ 2011 at Edgewater Fitness, also on Saturday, from 8 to 1. You can attend health seminars, get screened for high blood pressure, and talk to representatives from health related organizations. If that’s not enough to get you out the door, how about free giveaways and healthy food samples?
For the Not Motivated
Rather just watch other people work out and hope to lose weight vicariously? Pack up the family and spend a day at the Reach the Beach Nationals at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City. You’ll be convinced once and for all that cheer leading is a sport as you see teams from around the world perform choreography and stunts to try for prize money, cars and more. It takes place Friday through Sunday, 8 to 6.
If you live nearby any of these events, why not run or jog to get there? Stay healthy.
