On the other hand, well, you know. The Irish music still blaring at 2 a.m. The hangover that reminds you of too many car bombs and shamrock shakes. Finding strands of Mardi Gras beads behind your toilet and having no recollection of how you got them.
So it's time we got a little more involved with St. Patrick's Day, in my opinion. Sure, it's still fun to drink green beer and maybe do our best (= so, so bad) impression of that Riverdance fellow, but at the same time it would be fun to get something out of the holiday besides a hangover.
How the heck do you do that, though?

Looking to adopt a pet? The Anne Arundel SPCA is hosting their annual St. Pitty's Day party (and no, that's not a Pity Party) where successful adoptions of all pit bulls are FREE. Pit bulls don't deserve the bad reputation they've come to inhabit, but you'll only find that out by checking out the loving, good natured pups at the AACSPCA. And don't mind us if we adopt more than one...
Fleet Feet of Annapolis is having a 5k race around Annapolis on March 12th at 6:30 p.m. (we LOVE evening road races). It’s only $10 to participate, which is insane considering the prices of road races these days. All the money goes to the Wellness House of Annapolis, and the first 50 people to register get a free t-shirt. Costumes are encouraged!
SustainaFest, who puts together some of the best eco-friendly events around, are hosting their first annual Maryland Green Ball at the Governor Calvert House. They’ll be showcasing musicians, screening films, and presenting dialogues with the people working ‘round the clock to ing sustainable culture to the Chesapeake. Plus, there’s an open bar, local cuisine, and awesome Irish rock music from Barley Juice. Tickets are $80, but that’s probably less than you’d spend on green beer.
One of our favorite new restaurants, Shells Yes! in Chester, is hosting an Irish-inspired dinner menu with Bangers & Mash, Shepherd’s Pie, and of course Corned Beef & Cabbage. On Sunday they’re inging in the pipers and Irish music champions Water and Whiskey. The Washington Symphonic Brass are in town for a night of Celtic music. They’ll be joined by bagpiper Charlie Glendinning and the performance starts at 7:30 sharp at St. Anne’s in Church Circle. Green attire is encouraged.
The Eastport Democratic Club is hosting their daylong event of Green Beer Racing, keg tosses, and much more (there’s Kool Aid for the kids). What’s particularly exciting to us is the Teelin Irish Dance Company’s performances at 2:30 and 4 p.m., along with the “Best Dressed Dog” and “Cutest Leprechaun” contests later in the day. The Teelin Irish dancers don’t make enough appearances around town for our satisfaction, so we’ll be sure to catch them. And hey – if we end up tossing a keg or two, don’t judge us, ok?
If you're looking to get away for the weekend (and we don't blame you, especially if you live in downtown Annapolis), the Robert Morris Inn is offering an incredible special. For only $80 per person, you get dinner, a cozy room, and a eakfast at America’s oldest inn. Yes, it’s a Scottish inn, but that’s pretty close…
Also on the Eastern Shore, Leaky Pete's Oyster and Wine Bar is hosting their annual Patty in the Alley fest on March 9th with the Doug Segree Band (3), food, more green beer, and oysters. Ther’s a parade with bagpipes at 12:45, which you definitely don’t want to miss, but if you get there later in the day you’ll still have plenty of time t cele ate.
Local musician Anne Watts ings her most musical friends to Canvasback Restaurant in Cam idge to cele ate St. Patrick’s Day with style on March 16th.
St. Michaels has some incredible events for the whole family (even more reason to book that Robert Morris Inn room). There are scavenger hunts, costume contests, Irish wake processions, live music, and tons of discounts from retailers to keep you and the kids busy. At midnight on Sunday, check out the Annual (Shopping) Cart Races where a good time will be had by all. This is the kind of thing you have to see to believe , and so we definitely suggest you go see it.
