What We're Reading: Paula Deen's diagnosis, Burger King home delivery, and more

The announcement that Paula Deen has diabetes probably didn't come as a shock to anyone familiar with her Southern-style, high-in-butter-and-deep-frying foods. She was apparently diagnosed three years ago, but didn't go public with the information until today, when she also announced the launch of a new campaign, Diabetes in a New Light, with Novo Nordisk, the maker of the diabetes medication that Deen herself uses to control the disease. A lot of people have a lot of opinions on Deen's announcement, but all I'm going say is that the challenge to make some of Deen's recipes friendlier to diabetics is welcome. The New York Times blog looked at some of her recipes, trying to figure out which one takes the cake: Krispy Kreme bread pudding? Fried macaroni and cheese? The Donut Burger?

On a much lighter note, I recently finished writing an article about 15 years of food trends for an upcoming issue. Of help was this infographic about the evolution of food TV from Menuism/The Huffington Post. Among the interesting tidbits I learned: Until the Food Network came around in 1993, PBS was the leading producer of food-related television.

Have it your way at home: Burger King is testing home-delivery in 10 locations right in our neck of the woods. Well, kind of ... the 10 locations offering delivery are all in the Washington, D.C., region, though none close enough to order burgers and fries to ours home in Anne Arundel County. The two Maryland locations are Gaithersburg and Germantown. I'm not entirely sure, from a health standpoint, that making it even easier to get fast food is necessary, but who am I to judge?

One of my heroes, Mark Bittman, looks at why meat consumption has decreased 12.2 percent since 2007. My meat consumption goes up and down so much based on my mood and grocery budget that I can't even begin to comment on this. But Bittman has plenty to say!
January is the time of year to purge yourself of unused kitchen gadget, says TheKitchn.com. I see their point and, really, I'm not much of a hoarder. But I'm just not willing to part with anything, even that unused meat tenderizer.
