Dr. James York first came to Anne Arundel County as an Army officer assigned to Fort Meade. When he concluded his service as Chief of Orthopaedics at Kim ough Army Hospital, he decided to stay in the county and joined Chesapeake Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center.
He has taught at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at the Uniformed Services Medical School and is currently a clinical instructor in Orthopaedics for the University of Maryland.
Highly regarded by his peers as a specialist in the treatment of knee pain, Dr. York has also served as an Associate Master Instructor of advanced shoulder arthroscopic reconstruction for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA, www.aana.org). He has participated in clinical studies of knee ACL reconstruction with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM, sportsmed.org).
Dr. York is subspecialty Board Certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine for which he has demonstrated skill in treating shoulder, knee, hip, joint replacement, arthritis and degenerative disorders. Dr. York is a leader in the field of cartilage transplant surgery.
At Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Dr. York serves as Associate Chair of the Department of Surgery and is the Immediate Past President of the Medical Staff . He serves on the Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has held leadership positions in the county and state medical societies.
Visitors to Dr. York's office sometimes comment on the large framed diploma from the State University of New York, issued to James Joseph York in 1909. Dr. York keeps that diploma on the wall in memory of his grandfather and his father, both pediatricians in Schenectady, New York. Dr. York strives to follow their example in patient care.
You've seen him on the sidelines for years, serving as a team physician for area high schools. He has also organized pre-season physicals for student athletes at high schools and at Anne Arundel Community College. His tireless community service even extends to coaching and he holds a US Soccer Federation “D” License.
