Congressional Football Game
Come out to a fun event and support a great cause!
Back for the 13th time, the now-annual Congressional Football Game features a bi-partisan mix of members of Congress (along with a few former NFL players) playing U.S. Capitol Police officers in a friendly competition for charity. Tickets are $12.50 and doors open at 5:30 for a 7:25 kickoff. There will be an on-site post-game party open to all who purchased tickets.
Started in 2005 as a biennial event, the Congressional Football Game was organized to honor the men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police and to support the families of fallen officers. All proceeds from the game go to three charities: The U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund, Our Military Kids, and A Advantage 4 Kids.
Brief History:
The family-friendly event was inspired by the heroism of two U.S. Capitol Police officers in 1998. Officer Jacob “J.J.” Chestnut and Detective John Gibson gave their lives to protect members of congress and their staff, as well as visitors in the nation’s Capitol that day.
Former Congressman Rick Renzi (Arizona) resolved to find a fitting way to recognize the two officers’ sacrifice and lend support to the families they left behind. The effort resulted in the charity football game. In the years that followed, former NFL players Ken Harvey and John Booty came on board to help coach, play, and organize the football game, all while bringing wider recognition. Harvey and Booty remain heavily involved in the now annual showdown, along with other former pros. Among those who will be in attendance this year is Hall of Famer Andre Reed and former Commanders greats Gary Clark and Rocky McIntosh.
