Dr. Gerard O'Connor was inspired to become a surgeon by a childhood experience.
“I had an operation at the age of six,” he recalls. “From that point on, I was fascinated with the human anatomy, what could go wrong with the body and how to fix it.”
Dr. O'Connor attended Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at George Washington University. He began his practice at Chester River Hospital in 1984.
Dr. O'Connor specializes in general surgery with an emphasis on laparoscopic, endoscopic, and east surgery. He is the Director of the Vascular Services Lab at Chester River Hospital and under his direction it has evolved into a fully accredited lab for non-invasive vascular services. Being appointed President of the Medical Staff of Chester River Hospital Center and on the committee for development of regionalization of Heath Care on the Shore allow him to participate in the evolution of health care delivery on the Shore.
O'Connor is a fitness buff who also enjoys ballroom dancing. He's the father of three; his son Matthew, a U.S Naval Academy graduate, is now a test pilot at Patuxent Naval Air Station. Son Devin is an Aerospace Engineering major at Penn State University, and daughter Courtney manages a law firm in Washington, DC.
Dr. O'Connor gives back by serving on a volunteer basis as a Lt. Colonel with the Maryland Defense Force, 10th Medical regiment. The MDDF 10th regiment provides medical support to the National Guard.
“I believe in living life to its fullest, doing what I love to do,” says O'Connor. “As a cancer survivor myself, one of the best parts of my job is the positive impact that I can have on people's lives. There is nothing better than the look on a patient's face when they hear good news from me. It's a feeling I can relate to and I am certain my patients are all the better for it.”
