The difference between thirty and one hundred is obvious: one hundred is bigger, older, and wiser. In the case of SPF protection, the same holds true, right? Maybe, but with SPF the difference is only marginal. While an SPF of 30 blocks 97 percent of UV rays, one with an SPF factor of 100 only blocks 99 percent. As a consumer, it's important to understand that even though the SPF is dramatically higher, you are only getting a fraction of a difference in protection. Regardless of how high you go, the FDA recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Whether you opt for a factor of 15 or 50, however, don't skimp on the amount of sunscreen, use liberally and frequently (at least every two hours and again after sweating or swimming).
