“Endodontic procedures have become very refined in order to maximize success, but the hallmark of a successful procedure is a prudent diagnosis,” says Louis H. Berman, D.D.S., founder of Annapolis Endodontics. “Some teeth are just not amenable to endodontic treatment, like badly broken down teeth, root-fractured teeth, or teeth with bad gum disease around them. Every tooth is different; every case is different. That’s why preliminary assessment by an experienced clinician is paramount.”
Endodontics is the dental specialty dealing with diseases of the dental pulp, tooth root, and surrounding tissues. Also known as “root canal therapy,” endodontic treatment is a simple yet highly successful alternative to tooth extraction and dental implants. Advances in endodontic procedures and materials have evolved into a relatively painless procedure. Well over 14 million root canals are performed every year to resolve dental pain and treat infection. This infection can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of infection include pain or swelling associated with a tooth. In addition, sometimes there can be a dental infection with no symptoms at all.
