Wye Mills, MD 11/10/11 -This past weekend Wye River Upper School cele ated with it’s 3rd annual Wine Tasting in support of the Student Financial Aid Fund. Teachers, staff, parents, and friends of WRUS gathered to sample some wonderful wines and fresh local fare. Philip Bernot of Wishing Well Liquors in Easton orchestrated the wine selections and donated to the live auction.
This event is all about generosity and there was a beautiful diversity to the ways in which people gave. Every stakeholder in the school worked together to ensure the evening’s success. Music teacher, Kimberleigh Nichols, donated her musical talents as she played the piano for the event. Local commercial fisherman and WRUS parent, Guy Spurry donated oysters for the crowd to enjoy in addition to donating a bushel of oysters and a bushel of crabs to the live auction. His son Austin, a WRUS junior and aspiring waterman, shucked bivalves while sharing the importance of the school in his life with guests. Many WRUS parents collaborated to create beautiful baskets of wine related items for the live auction. Michelle and Bill Corace, event co-chairs, donated more than two dozen bottles of exceptional wine from their own collection for both the live auction and the own bag picks.
WRUS Executive Director, Chrissy Aull, summed up the reason for the event best, “There are many families who do not plan to send their student to private school, but when their child’s learning needs are not being met in their current school setting, what choice do they have? We want to be there for more students with a learning difference, whether they can afford private school or not.” This event is the centerpiece to the school’s year long effort to raise one hundred percent of it’s financial aid funding. Approximately 49% of all WRUS families receive financial aid and the WRUS development team works year-round to continue to meet this need. The end result becomes a diverse socio-economic population in a school where every family shares the same goal: to see their child happily attaining his or her academic and social potential in a place that understands and cele ates the ways that students learn.
Wye River Upper School is a college preparatory high school for grades 9-12 that offers a supportive, yet challenging curriculum for students with a wide range of learning styles and needs on the Eastern Shore and Central Maryland regions. WRUS is located on the campus of Chesapeake College in the Higher Education Center and provides technology across the curriculum, fine art and music electives, environmental science instruction, morning sports, dual enrollment with Chesapeake College, and a low student/teacher ratio.
