Update on Save Our Services

There was standing room only at the town hall meetings in March hosted by Li ary Administrator, Skip Auld. More than 850 concerned residents listened intently as Mr. Auld discussed the funding issues the li ary system is facing.

County Executive John Leopold released his Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2012 on April 15. As part of his proposal, Mr. Leopold recommended the restoration of the materials budget to $3 million and annual funding at a level that would preserve all current services and operating hours. The budget is now in the hands of the County Council members, who are looking at the budgets of each county agency with an eye toward making cuts.

Prior to approving a final budget by May 31, the Anne Arundel County Council will hold two public hearings:

Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at Old Mill High School in Millersville
r
Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Arundel Center in Annapolis
r
We are asking all of you who value the Li ary to attend one of these hearings and add your voice to ours in urging County Council members to support the budget proposed by the County Executive. Anyone wishing to speak may sign up 30 minutes before the meeting begins. If you cannot attend a Public Hearing but would like to advocate on the li ary's behalf, contact your County Councilman directly. A list of County officials and their contact information is included on the li ary's website.

The Li ary is a family affair...

We received a donation from a family concerned about the li ary's budget crisis. In particular, they wanted us to know how much their young daughters love thier li ary. We were touched by this letter and wanted to share their story, along with others about how the li ary is such a big part of a family's life together. All these stories come to us from AACPL patrons.

Summer Reading Club goes around the world...

“One World, Many Stories,” is the 2011 theme for the Li ary's annual Summer Reading Club. Members will be transported throughout the world through books and events planned for the six week program, which begins on June 20 and runs through July 30. (Children may register for the Summer Reading Club at their local li ary starting June 6.)

The Summer Reading Club is supported by the Li ary Foundation through generous corporate supporters and individual donations. If you would like to make a gift to support the Summer Reading Club, please contact Lois Miller at 410.222.7371 for information. You can also make an online contribution designated for Summer Reading. We will direct your funds to that program. Only $5 is needed to provide six weeks of summer reading fun for one child. Invest in your Li ary

For those of you over age 70 who have IRAs and must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD): Consider making a donation to the Li ary Foundation directly from your IRA, for the 2011 tax year. It counts toward your RMD, but does not count as income on your tax return like when you just move the RMD money to one of your personal accounts. Ask your banker or stock oker for details.
