Update on Save Our Services
r
There was standing room only at the town hall meetings in March hosted by Li ary Administrator, Skip Auld. More than 850 concerned residents listened intently as Mr. Auld discussed the funding issues the li ary system is facing.
r
County Executive John Leopold released his Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2012 on April 15. As part of his proposal, Mr. Leopold recommended the restoration of the materials budget to $3 million and annual funding at a level that would preserve all current services and operating hours. The budget is now in the hands of the County Council members, who are looking at the budgets of each county agency with an eye toward making cuts.
r
Prior to approving a final budget by May 31, the Anne Arundel County Council will hold two public hearings:
r
Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at Old Mill High School in Millersville
r
Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Arundel Center in Annapolis
r
We are asking all of you who value the Li ary to attend one of these hearings and add your voice to ours in urging County Council members to support the budget proposed by the County Executive. Anyone wishing to speak may sign up 30 minutes before the meeting begins. If you cannot attend a Public Hearing but would like to advocate on the li ary's behalf, contact your County Councilman directly. A list of County officials and their contact information is included on the li ary's website.
r
For more information about the County Executive's proposal, see articles in the Capital, Maryland Gazette and the Baltimore Sun. (Access to archived articles in these newspapers is free through the Li ary's website) Links to Mr. Leopold's speech and other information is available on the County's website.

Thank you again for your support of the Anne Arundel County Public Li ary!

The Li ary is a family affair...
r
We received a donation from a family concerned about the li ary's budget crisis. In particular, they wanted us to know how much their young daughters love thier li ary. We were touched by this letter and wanted to share their story, along with others about how the li ary is such a big part of a family's life together. All these stories come to us from AACPL patrons.
r
"My mom was a voracious reader, and I took after her. My fifth grade teacher recognized quickly that I was reading pretty far in advance of the rest of the class, and arranged for me to walk across town (all of about 300 yards) to the local anch of the county li ary...What a treat!...Visiting the li ary is still one of my favorite pastimes, and I love popping in to the local li ary..."-Richard, AACPL Patron
r
"I have loved li aries for as long as I can remember. Even before I could read my mother took me to the li ary... My family made an outing of going to the li ary. Everyone went and got books: my father, anything about World War II; my mother, all kinds of novels; me, first picture books and then anything historical... So on the day I turned 14, the first thing I did wasn't blowing out the candles or picking out a new dress, it was going up the front stairs to the li ary and signing up for my very own adult li ary card. I haven't been without one since."-Anonymous AACPL Patron
r
"I ing my 90 year old mother, Dorothy Darling, from Crofton Care and Rehab via wheel chair to your li ary. Lovely way to spend time together." -Nise (McIntyre) Darling, AACPL Patron

Thanks to everyone for sharing your li ary stories. We are continuing to collect your stories, so please email Jennifer Halstead, Development Assistant with your story today.

Make a unique gift this Mother's Day
r
Do you remember your mother reading to you as you drifted off to sleep? Or helping you pack up books at your li ary to enjoy reading at home?
r
If you are an avid reader today, Mom probably helped lay the foundation by sharing her love of reading and li aries with you. Would you like to thank your mother this year with a unique gift in her honor? You can make a tax-deductible donation and we will send her an acknowledgement of your gift via email.
r
A secure donation can be made online. Please note in order for the gift to be acknowledged prior to Mother's Day, the donation must be made by May 4. Please provide an email address for the recipient. Contact Jennifer Halstead, Development Assistant with any questions.
