Central Maryland Braces for Another Round of Snow and Frigid Temperatures During Friday Morning Rush Hour
ANNAPOLIS, MD - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory that will be in effect beginning at 4 a.m. Friday (January 19) through early Friday evening. The Friday morning commute will be impacted by snow covered surfaces, dangerously cold temperatures, and wind chills. The forecast currently calls for 1 to 3 inches, with more snowfall totals north of Route 50 and less snowfall south of Route 50. For more on the forecast, visit the National Weather Service website.
Expect slippery road conditions on Friday morning. The Annapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) is prepared for this storm with plow crews and deicing agents. If possible, avoid travel during the storm to allow crews time and space to do their work. As a safety precaution, do not tailgate or follow too close behind a snowplow because these vehicles are usually spreading deicing materials from the back of the truck. Do not attempt to overtake a snowplow because 1). visibility for passing may be limited and 2). snowplows are especially wide, extending several feet on either side, causing the plow (but not the truck) to sometimes cross the center line.
If you must travel, please slow down and exercise caution in potentially icy conditions. Black ice can be especially dangerous because it is nearly invisible to drivers, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Warming Center Opening: The Stanton Center, at 92 West Washington Street in Annapolis, will be open every night the outside temperature is below 32 degrees. The current hours are:
- Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at 7 p.m. until Friday morning at 7 a.m.
- Friday, January 19th, 2024, at 7 p.m. through Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (operating all day Saturday).
- Sunday, January 21st, 2024, at 7 p.m. until Monday morning at 7 a.m.
Annapolis Call Center: The Annapolis Call Center will be operational throughout this event for non-emergency questions related to the winter storm and City Services. Annapolis residents can call 410-260-2211. For emergencies, dial 9-1-1.
As of Thursday afternoon, the City Manager does not anticipate calling a snow emergency or requiring vehicles to be removed from snow emergency routes. For information on Annapolis’ general policies for snow, plowing, and declarations of snow emergencies, visit the Snow Information page on the City’s website.
CLEAR SIDEWALKS: Annapolis City Code requires property owners to clear adjacent public sidewalks (including sidewalks in the side and rear of properties) of snow and ice within three hours after snow or sleet has stopped falling (or by 11 a.m. following an overnight snow event). Please assist neighbors who may otherwise be unable to clear sidewalks (also, never use fertilizer to melt snow and ice since the nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizer can harm local streams, groundwater, and the Chesapeake Bay).
