Community Volunteers Install Green Roof on Brookland’s New Artist Housing Facility

Local nonprofit DC Greenworks will lead community volunteers in the planting of a green roof on Artspace’s new Brookland Artist Lofts facility on May 13th.

Designed by Hickok Cole Architects, Brookland Artist Lofts will provide affordable live/work space for local artists in DC’s Brookland neighborhood. The 78,000 sf facility includes 41 housing units and underground parking along with a dance studio for neighboring Dance Place, a non-profit community dance school and arts center.

A shared plaza will help create a vibrant campus between the two facilities.
The 9,700 sf Extensive Garden Roof Assembly, designed for 28,500 plants, will consist of sedums and grasses that can withstand harsh growing conditions, installed over the membrane roofing system.
DC Greenworks will coordinate and manage volunteers from Artspace, Hickok Cole Architects, Oculus, Dance Place, JDC Construction and key members of the Brookland Community in the installation of the roof.

Organizations involved in funding the project have also been invited to take part, including the District of Columbia, Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), the Office of the Deputy Mayor, District of Columbia Neighborhood Investment Fund, National Equity Fund, Bank of America and TD Bank.

Brookland Artist Lofts is being developed by Artspace of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the nation’s leading nonprofit real estate developer for artist live-work projects with the mission to “create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artist live-work projects.”

DC Greenworks was established 17 years ago to help resolve urban environmental and economic problems by fostering local enterprise, job training and community stewardship, especially in under served communities.
