Gaines self-titled 1992 debut, featuring The Band's Garth Hudson on saxophone, organ and accordion, drew critical praise from far and wide, and put him on the musical map as a sensitive folk-rock artist. Rolling Stone called him "the voice of a new generation". The Chicago Tribune claimed, "Gaines is extraordinary and timeless". Then, Gaines' deceptively simple, straightforward music saw him shoot to national fame with his illiant cover of Peter Ga iel's "In Your Eyes". Six albums and numerous gigs (with the likes of Sting, Melissa Etheridge, and Tom Petty) later, Gaines is still at it; only now, performing in more intimate venues as a headliner - which suits the artist and his music just fine.
