Greetings Writers:
The Annapolis/Anne Arundel County Chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association (MWA) will host local editors including Laura Shovan, Kathleen Hellen, Margaret Mullens, Vonnie Crist, and Danuata Kosk-Kosicka on Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 pm inRoom 205 at Maryland Hall.
The general theme for the August meeting is local journals. Each editor will discuss their role as editor, how to eak into the publishing industry and what their publication is seeking. Sufficient question and answer time will be allotted for the audience.
Besides their current profession, all five editors speaking at the August meeting share one common publication and that is the MWA Anthology, Life in Me Like Grass on Fire: Love Poems.
Laura Shovan is the editor of Little Patuxent Review. She teaches in the Maryland State Arts Council's Artist-in-Education program. She recently received her third honorable mention in the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards. Laura's chapbook, Mountain, Log, Salt and Stone, won the 2010 Harriss Poetry Prize.
Kathleen Hellen is a senior editor for The Baltimore Review. With a doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon University, she teaches creative writing and journalism at Coppin State University. Awards include poetry prizes from the Washington Square Review, James Still and Thomas Merton.
Margaret S. Mullins is the editor of Manorborn and a poet with published works in Magnapoets, New Verse News, and Persimmon Tree. Her poem “Chessmen” won second place in the Bridge Poetry Contest and she is a Pushcart Prize nominee.r
Vonnie Crist is the current editor from Gunpower Review, a columnist for "Harford's Heart Magazine," and an illustrator for "The Vegetarian Journal." Crist has been awarded the MSAC Writer’s Award, the 2011 Jack Reid Scholarship, and numerous Preditors & Editors Awards.
Danuta E. Kosk-Kosicka is the translations editor for the Loch Raven Review. She holds a PH.D in Biochemistry. Her poems and prose pieces have been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies in the USA, Poland, and Ireland. She is the translator for two books by Lidia Kosk, and poems by Lucille Clifton, Josephine Jacobsen, and Linda Pastan.
The meeting is open to the public and free to MWA members and first-time guests. All others may pay $5.00. Annual dues to MWA are $40.00 and include other benefits on top of monthly attendance. For more information visit: www.marylandwriters.org.
