NORTH BETHESDA, MD – Jazz sensation Pat Metheny – who last transfixed Strathmore audiences at his sold out 2010 “Orchestrion” concert – will return to the Music Center on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 8 p.m. For his latest performance at Strathmore, the jazz guitarist and composer will pair with frequent collaborator, double bassist Larry Grenadier. A recipient of an extraordinary 18 Grammy Awards, Metheny will perform “velvety smooth” (BBC Music) solo and duo acoustic tunes “with marvelous concentration in his playing…[conveying] that intensity can take the form of a whisper as well as a roar” (The New York Times). Since emerging on the jazz scene playing for legendary vi aphonist Gary Burton in the early 1970s, Kansas City native Metheny has continued to redefine the genre and realm of electronic music by experimenting with new technology, evolving the improvisational sonic potential of his instrument and even developing new kinds of guitars. His trademark playing style is a blend of loose and flexible articulation that is modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing and blues. His band, the Pat Metheny Group, has collected an unprecedented seven Grammies for seven consecutive albums. As “king of the jazz circuit” (The Guardian, UK), the versatile musician has garnered 33 Grammy nominations in a record 12 categories, including Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo and Best Instrumental Composition. Throughout his career, Metheny has performed with such diverse artists as Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall and David Bowie.
Larry Grenadier's first foray into music came as a teenager, performing in San Francisco in a band with his others. He began formal studies of the acoustic bass at age 12, and by 16 he had a busy career performing with local touring musicians in his native state. In the 1990s, Grenadier first toured with Metheny as well as with other greats, from Brad Mehldau, with whom he still plays regularly, to John Scofield and Charles Lloyd. Collaborating with Jeff Ballard and Mark Turner, Grenadier is a member of the genre-bending trio FLY, which has released two critically-acclaimed albums with an “expansive illuminating palette of harmonies, tones and expressive counterpoint” (Amplifier Magazine).
