Blacktastic: Children's Festival of Maryland + DC Black History & Culture

This Black History Month, students across Maryland and DC will celebrate the pure joy of Black history and culture through the arts at Blacktastic: A Children’s Festival of Black History & Culture—an arts integrated, performance-packed virtual experience produced by Arts for Learning Maryland. Blacktastic will feature four enriching performances — good for ALL grade levels — performed by teaching artists that enhance classroom curriculum using music, theater, hip-hop, and spoken word poetry. Students will be captivated while learning about important historic Black leaders from Maryland and DC — including Thurgood Marshall, Senator Verda Freeman Welcome, and living legends like Mezzo Soprano Opera Singer Denyce Graves.

An expert on the science of happiness, she shares entertaining insights on how to make wiser choices and live a happier life. AACC Theatre’s goal with this project is to support and give our budding theatre artists and theatrical community room to experiment and take risks in a safe space.
Voices of the Enslaved, Part II

African Americans in the Civil War Presentation by Dr. Clara Small
February 23rd, 2 to 4 p.m.; Dorchester County Historical Society, Cambridge
Dr. Small will share the stories of African Americans who served in the Civil War, particularly highlighting those of Dorchester County. Dr. Small co-authored a book on this particular topic, alongside several other books related to African American and Delmarva history. $5.00 admission, though if you are attending the earlier author presentation we'll have on this date, the admission fee covers both events.
Ballet Theatre of Maryland presents "Momentum: A Mixed Bill"

On February 23 and 24, Ballet Theatre of Maryland premieres seven new works in Momentum: A Mixed Bill at Maryland Hall. Giving audiences a taste of diverse neoclassical and contemporary movement styles, this mixed repertory production will feature one-act adaptations of Macbeth and a George MacDonald fairytale as well as original stories and non-narrative works.

Free Public Lecture - Shrubs and Their Ecological Function in the Landscape
February 27th, 11 a.m.; Talbot County Free Library Easton Branch
Talbot County Garden Club will hold its second in a series of public lectures entitled "Shrubs and Their Ecological Function in the Landscape" presented by Eva Mondheim. Eva is a faculty member for the Professional Horticulture Program and Continuing Education Department at Longwood Gardens. In this presentation Eva will share the multiple functions that each shrub plays of which most gardeners are unaware when planting shrubs. The more we know about their functions, she says, the more likely we are to team up with the right plants to do the heavy lifting in the environment. This lecture will be held at the Talbot County Free Library in Easton.
