Annapolis Chamber Music Festival
August 18th, 7:30 p.m.; St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Annapolis
A musician’s voice is shaped by the people and places he or she encounters in the many places they call home. This concert features works by three composers whose lives have brought them to new and unexpected places, resulting in a musical voice that is truly unique. Paquito D'Rivera's "Aires Tropicales" traces the composer's path from Cuba to the United States, using the varied colors of the woodwind quintet to present Afro-Latin jazz in his own distinct style. American composer Andy Akiho molded his postmodern style while studying steel pan in Trinidad, and his work, "Revolve," for string quintet, brims with Caribbean energy. Finally, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a product of diaspora himself, born to an English mother and a father from Sierra Leone. His brilliant, explosive Nonet expertly showcases an ensemble of winds, strings, and piano and shows influences of European, African, and even Native American music.
