It wasn't pretty but Navy held on to defeat conference foe Tulane, 23-21, Saturday in the Midshipmen's 2017 home opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
Navy's inconsistencies were surprising given last Friday's dominant performance against Florida Atlantic but the Mids continue to make their mark in the American Athletic Conference, now holding a 3-0 series lead against the Green Wave and a 15-2 regular season conference record since removing their independent status before the 2015 season.
Spalding product Zach Abey threw an interception and lost a fumble that was returned for a Tulane touchdown in the second quarter but accumulated 240 of Navy's 326 total yards, including a 79-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Tyler Carmona.
The blue and gold are off next week but host Cincinnati on Saturday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m.
