From the start of her high school career, Katie Worm quickly earned the respect of her older teammates. In a playoff contest against Kent County during her freshman season as a member of the varsity squad, Worm propelled herself to the annals of Colonel Richardson lore by kicking the game-winning shootout goal and advancing the Colonels to the next round.
“For a freshman to do that, you’re nervous the whole game and then you get out there and you prove to your seniors that you can do it,” Worm says. “Your stomach drops and it’s the best feeling ever.”
“As soon as I started running up to the ball and just focused on that goalie, you just kind of zone out at that point and just think about that goal. [My teammates] definitely looked at me a different way after that. I proved myself.”
That confidence only grew for Worm as she developed a knack for trash talk. It’s only natural this three-sport athlete gravitates to Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs as her favorite athlete. Like Suggs, she isn’t scared to let her opponents know when she gets the best of them.
“I never say anything too mean,” Worm says. “If I get by ‘em, I’ll let ‘em know they need to catch up.”
For as much confidence as she displays, humility and motivation were in order during the Maryland 1A State Softball Championship Game versus Mountain Ridge High School last June. Down 8-1, Colonel Richardson battled back to tie the game in the seventh inning and forced an eighth inning, where they eventually fell 9-8.
“For us to come back and then lose it,” says Worm, who won a sportsmanship award for the 2013 season, “it took a good month to actually come back from that. That was pretty devastating.”
In her spare time, Worm works at her family’s produce stand, where she has helped out since she was 12 years old. She’s considering attending either Salisbury University or Chesapeake College following graduation.
She plans to major in education and aspires to become an English or gym teacher at Colonel Richardson.
