The Music of Ryoko Akama

The University of Baltimore presents a free concert of the music Ryoko Akama, a composer based in Huddersfield, U.K. Akama’s music creates situations that magnify silence, time and space, and she also composes text-based scores in collaboration with other musicians. Her work is released on several CDs from the Another Timbre label, and has been featured on festivals and in venues in the UK, Denmark, The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Poland, and Sweden.
The concert will feature musicians Irene Han (cello), Jeremy Lyons (guitar), Ian Power (piano), Shelly Purdy (vibraphone), and Sarah Thomas (violin). These musicians represent local groups such as the Bergamot Quartet, the Pique Collective, Mind on Fire, and Mikrokingdom.
Akama will also give an artist’s talk the same day at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Baltimore LAP Building, 10 W Preston St., Room 308. All events are open to the public.
Ryoko Akama’s visit is supported by the Peggy and Yale Gordon Charitable Trust, which has supported the advancement of classical music in Baltimore for the past 35 years.
