Wildlife abounds above ground, especially where there is water. And there are worlds upon worlds of life just below the surface and deep into the earth’s oceans. For most photographers, underwater photography comes with its own planet of differences and challenges than when amongst terrestrials.
Tom Major was born and raised in Maryland. After greeting moon craters for the first time when given a small telescope for Christmas at the age of 10, Tom fell in love with everything outdoors. His underwater photography first began with film, where he was first confronted with how, after factoring in water current, light refraction, and color distortion, the aquatic environment requires an entirely different skillset. Meanwhile, digital SLR’s finally improved enough to where Tom became comfortable shooting still images and hasn’t stopped shooting since!
Tom is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), as well as a field contributor for Nature Photographer Magazine in which he has also won photo contests. He is also a retired IT professional who, today, does consulting work for federal government projects. When he’s not traveling above water photographing nature in all kinds of terrain or in the ocean with his diving buddies, Tom volunteers his time as a diver at the National Aquarium in Baltimore where he feeds his many underwater friends (pictured above is his buddy-girl, Calypso, in the Black Tip Reef exhibit).
