If there ever was a case for the “less is more” argument, it can be found in blush. When applied correctly in a shade complimentary to one’s skin tone, blush can be the perfect finish to a flawless face. And it’s high time we stopped thinking of it as an afterthought in our beauty routine.
We’ve listed our top dos and don’ts for the rosy—or pink, own, rouge, and a host of other hues (even violet!)—so you can spend your days blushing for all the right reasons.
The Formulations
Powder Blush in Flush by Smashbox

We’re not about to tell Grandma to toss out that powder compact she’s sworn by for the last few decades—there’s a reason for its longevity in the beauty industry—but there are plenty of other options worth trying.
Powder Perfect for all skin types, particularly those on the oilier side, powder blushes help to add a luminous warmth to the cheeks.
Cream These smooth, velvety blushes can be applied with the fingertips to help create a more natural look.
Pencil Ideal for the minimalist, most pencils offer color for the cheeks and lips in one simple makeup stick.
Gel A lightweight alternative to powder blushes, gel formulas are great at staying put amid heat and humidity.
Liquid Typically found in highly pigmented stain formulations, liquid blush is a great way to add a hint of color to cheeks. The key here is to just add a couple of dots of the liquid from the ush applicator and blend immediately after application with the finger tips or a sponge to avoid streaking!
DO keep application to the apples of cheeks.
If you’re feeling inspired by the “more is more” philosophy often spotted along the runways, blend blush from slightly under the cheekbones up to the temple.
DON'T be afraid to try new shades.
It can take a while to find a color that really wows, so be daring until you find what suits you best. Just remember, the lighter your skin tone, the lighter your blush color should be.

DON'T pile it on.
Blush should appear natural looking; its purpose is to emphasize your natural glow.
DO add a little shimmer.
To really make your cheekbones sparkle, use blush with some pearlescent pigments. Just be careful there’s not actual glitter in the formula—or you’ll risk looking more Gaga than glam.
DON'T forget to blend.
You don’t want clown circles or streaks along your face! And if the blush doesn’t come with its own applicator, be sure to invest in a quality ush. (This is especially true for powder blushes!).
