Anne Arundel Eye Center
Dr. Samuel Boles is a person of impeccable credentials: a board certified opthalmologist, one of Maryland’s top ophthalmic surgeons and the leader of Anne Arundel Eye Center’s state-of-the-art treatment center. Yet, he is most gratified by the thousands of patients he’s helped to restore and preserve their vision.
The Center he founded not only offers opthalmic exams and diagnostic surgical eye care, but also specializes in the treatment of both glaucoma and cataracts. In addition to exceptional expertise in the traditional method of cataract surgery, Dr. Boles now offers the Laser Assisted (LenSX) method. This advanced technique captures precise, hi-res images of the eye and maps a cataract surgery that is 100% unique to the patient. The laser then helps the doctor perform the surgery with exacting precision not attainable through traditional surgery, especially when addressing astigmatism. Says Dr. Boles, “The LenSX Laser is the most technologically advanced option for cataract patients today.”
His reputation for vision care excellence is what ings patients to Dr. Boles. Yet, most patients will comment warmly upon the patient-friendly treatment, a hallmark of Anne Arundel Eye Center. Dr. Boles gives credit to the Center’s entire medical team of caring and knowledgeable professionals, including Consultative Optometrist Kathryn Turner, OD, for making the best eye care comfortable and accessible to everyone.
Taking another step forward, Dr. Boles is now offering his patients a new online patient portal. Patients have access to their visit summary, next steps, at home directions for care, when to see the doctor next, a list of prescriptions and more. Once a patient has signed up, the portal will email a record of every visit. “When you give people that knowledge and power, it gives them the ability to take part in their care,” says Dr. Boles. “Patients are more likely to comply with their therapy if they understand what you’re asking them to do and why you’re asking them to do it. Naturally, that leads to better outcomes.”
Dr. Boles received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, completed his post-doctoral training at a Harvard University Cornea research lab, a Yale University affiliated Hospital in Bridgeport Connecticut, George Washington University for Ophthalmology Residency and the University of California, San Diego for Glaucoma Fellowship. He helped originate the Glaucoma Co-Management Roundtable to improve patient care through better communication and education. Dr. Boles serves on the Board of Directors for the Maryland Society for Sight and is an active volunteer in the community offering periodic free screenings and specific community outreach programs.
Dr. Boles chose to specialize in glaucoma and cataract care due to the overwhelming need. More than three million Americans have glaucoma and half are unaware that they have it, while cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in adults 65 and older. “Our work makes such a difference in quality of life,” says Dr. Boles. “After a procedure, the patient’s joy in seeing better is truly our joy too.”
