Hurricane Isaias Toll on the Severn River
The Severn River Association released an update on how Hurricane Isaias impacted the Severn River on August 3rd. The torrential downpours and high winds knocked down trees and created power outages as well as leaving fish kills along the shorelines, bringing in stinky blue-algae blooms, sediment plumes, and leaving no swimming advisories. A fish kill is when a fish is suffocated in dead water, or water with very low concentrations of oxygen. These were caused by the strong winds which flushed low-oxygen water from the bottom of the river to the surface, where the fish hang out to get oxygen.
