Top ten Maryland finalists’ doodles will be exhibited at the Walters
Baltimore—The Walters Art Museum announced today that it will be supporting Doodle 4 Google™ 2012 by encouraging students in kindergarten through 12th grade to participate. Ten state finalists’ submissions will be exhibited at the Walters from May 23–June 24, 2012. The museum will promote this competition to teachers and students within Maryland communities.
Doodle 4 Google is a nationwide contest to redesign Google’s homepage banner around the theme “If I could travel in time, I’d visit…” Winners will be chosen by the online community with help from guest judges like Katy Perry and Jordan Sparks. The national winner will be awarded a $30,000 college scholarship and have his or her doodle featured on the United States google.com homepage. “The Walters supports learning at all ages so we are pleased to participate in the Doodle 4 Google competition to inspire students’ imagination and creativity through art,” said Walters Director Gary Vikan. “Our diverse collections, including mummies, armor, paintings and sculptures, allow children to transport themselves to other places from ancient civilizations to modern times.”
Doodle 4 Google is one of several efforts by Google to encourage and cele ate the creativity of young people by asking students to create their own Google doodle. The theme this year is “If I could travel in time, I’d visit...” Doodle 4 Google gives students a blank canvas to harness their curiosity and imagine the past, present, and/or future anywhere in the world. After all doodles have been submitted to Google by March 23rd, a team of Googlers and then guest judges — such as Katy Perry, Phineas and Ferb creator and executive producer Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, and recording artist Jordin Sparks — will help choose the top doodles. Then on May 2nd, Google will give the final vote to you, and one winner from each grade group will be chosen by a public vote. First prize will be awarded to the winning doodler on May 17th, and their doodle will be showcased on google.com on May 18th.
The Walters Art Museum
The Walters Art Museum is located in downtown Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District at North Charles and Centre streets. Its permanent collection includes ancient art, medieval art and manuscripts, decorative objects, Asian art, and Old Master and 19th-century paintings.
