GUN APPLICATIONS SEE 48% INCREASE OVER 2019
The number of gun purchase applications that the Maryland State Police has processed so far in 2020 has reached 48% higher than the total number of applications they processed last year, Bryan Renbaum reported for MarylandReporter.com this week. Maryland appears to be following the national trend. A recent University of California study states that during this past spring, which marked the first peak of the pandemic, that nationwide gun sales increased more than 64 percent.
MARYLAND SEES HIGHEST 1-DAY COVID SPIKE SINCE AUGUST
On Tuesday, Maryland health officials reported 897 new coronavirus cases, the most in one day since early August. Nine new deaths tied to COVID-19 were also reports; according to Ben Leonard of the Baltimore Sun’s reporting.
- D.C., Maryland, and Virginia reported daily numbers above their recent averages, with each jurisdiction seeing a rise this month. Governor Larry Hogan (R) said Tuesday that he expects the pandemic to worsen this fall in Maryland but added that he has no plans to bring back the type of restrictions put in place earlier this year, reports Ovetta Wiggins in the Washington Post.
- The number of COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County has increased by more than 100 for each of seven consecutive days, Bethesda Beat reported. On Tuesday, the county added 157 cases, an increase of 0.62% from Monday's total.
- Like many hospitals across the country, Frederick Health Hospital is filling up with coronavirus patients once again, Greg Swatek of the Frederick News-Post reported. On Sunday, it was treating 20 COVID-19 patients, according to the county health department. That's the highest number of patients with the disease at Frederick Health Hospital since May 30th when 24 were being treated. The number had been below 20 ever since.
