With the recent stay at home order in Maryland, we’re all sticking around our houses this spring. But there are so many things we can do around the house to create a sunny atmosphere. And it’s more than just spring cleaning. The home remodeling experts at Brothers Services share 10 DIY projects that bring the feeling of fresh air and warm weather inside and outside your home.
Inside Your Home
Change Your Cabinet Hardware
It is not a great time to go furniture shopping, but staring at an outdated dresser or kitchen cabinetry can be especially annoying when you’re home all day. However, something as simple as changing out the hardware can make a big difference in the design. Pick out new drawer pulls and knobs online and have them shipped to your home within a few days! Make sure to measure your current hardware first. If the handles or pulls are the same sizes as your existing hardware, all you need to do is unscrew the old drawer pulls and screw in the new ones. If they are not, then you will need to drill new holes and cover old ones with putty and paint.
Swap Your Bedding
If you don’t already have a winter and summer bedding set, consider purchasing a new quilt or duvet cover online. A springtime floral pattern or brighter hue than your usual bedding will make your whole room feel more inviting in the spring and summer.
Re-Cover Throw Pillows
Just like swapping out bedding, updating throw pillow covers with brighter colors and fun patterns is an easy and inexpensive way to update any area from the bedroom to a window seat. You can purchase new pillow covers, but they are also very easy to DIY. There are even plenty of no-sew throw pillow tutorials, so you don’t even need a sewing machine.
De-Clutter Your Closet
Do you feel like you need a bigger closet? While that might not be possible, spring is a great time to declutter, and even make some extra money with online secondhand shops. Sell your gently used clothes on apps like Poshmark, or send in all of your clothes to an online consignment store like Thredup, who will even provide the bag to ship them in.
Order and Hang New Photo Prints
With online photo ordering sites, it’s easier than ever to get prints mailed directly to you. Plus, going through the photos you have taken in the past year allows you to relive some great memories. A mini getaway! New prints in the frames around your home will automatically give rooms a fresh feeling. You can even order the photos in frames, on canvas, or even on metal for something unique to hang on the walls.
Outside Your Home
Seal Window Air Leaks
Now is a great time to take care of small projects around the house that you have been putting off, like checking for and sealing air leaks. Air leaks happen when outside air enters through small cracks or openings in the windows, allowing warm air in during the spring and summer months. Fixing them not only makes your home’s temperature more comfortable, but it can also save you in electrical bills. Learn how to find and fix air leaks yourself from the experts at Brothers.
Build an Herb Garden
Bring the outdoors to your windowsill and grow fresh herbs you can actually use in your kitchen, ready in time for summer entrees. You can usually purchase potted herbs at the grocery store. And, many companies also sell herb garden kits that have everything you need to get started.
Propagate Plants
Do you already have a plant collection? Many plants such as pothos and philodendrons can be easily propagated in water. Simply cut at the bottom of the stem, directly beneath the small brown root nodes. Place the cuttings in a small jar with tap water and replace the water every few days. Within weeks, you will have a plant with roots an inch long or even longer. Then you can either keep growing the plant in the glass or plant it in a pot with soil.
Upgrade Your Front Door
Spread some joy for those walking by with a bright and fun front door! Springtime calls for flowers so a new wreath or flowering plants can really bring the spring atmosphere to your home. Go a step further and give your front door a fun new color of paint, a novelty knocker, or new hardware, all of which can be purchased online. Plus, if someone in your home frequently forgets their keys, now is a great time to install a smart lock system with a numerical code.
When you’re working on spring projects around your house, you may notice some things that require a professional to install or fix. If the project is aesthetic, like updating your kitchen or bathroom, you can lock in low prices with a remodeler now to begin work in a few months. If the project is something essential, like a roof leak, electrical problem, or plumbing issue, contact a full-service remodeler now to fix it immediately, before it becomes a bigger and more expensive issue.
