Conflict is all around us, and is part of being human. It can feel unmanageable and impossible to deal with on our own, and can become overwhelming in times like these where face-to-face communication is very limited.
These are some common sources of conflict:
- “Your dog is always on my lawn!”
- “You need to give me more time with our son!”
- “If you don’t return my deposit I will sue you!”
- “Where do you plan to live when you get out of prison?”
- “You take no responsibility for yourself since you’ve moved back home!”
These are the kinds of challenges that the Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center (AACRC) helps manage and mediate remotely, and at no charge. Mediation allows all participants to peacefully resolve their conflicts from home with the support of neutral, nonjudgmental third parties. Our trained mediators do not make suggestions or give advice. But they will listen to all sides nonjudgmentally, and help you communicate, understand, and form agreements that will satisfy everyone involved in the conflict. The process is confidential and is not a court proceeding. All you need to use mediation is a computer device with a camera, such as a laptop, tablet or cellphone; AACRC staff is happy to help assist with the technology.
AACRC also provides free, over the phone Conflict Coaching for circumstances where mediation may not be desired or possible. Conflict Coaching is a one-on-one, confidential phone consultation where a coach listens to anything and everything that’s been happening to cause a conflict. Coaches help participants feel heard, identify goals and strategies, and will record any ideas that come out of the sessions for follow up.
The activities above can be accomplished remotely. Other services provided by AACRC, some of which may be provided remotely, include:
- Conflict Resolution education presentations to community, faith, and government groups where we discuss conflict styles and effective communication.
- Conflict Resolution presentations to school groups. When working with youth, we use a unique “peace wheel” which teaches the basic process of mediation. The children are encouraged to use the process when dealing with peers or their parents/guardians.
- Professional facilitation of business, nonprofit, and government agency meetings and workshops.
- Facilitation of Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Community Conferencing for people who have been affected by harmful behavior or actions with the goal of creating an agreement that will repair the damage and provide reconciliation for all participants.
- For-fee trainings in Anger Management for individuals and for business and organizational needs.
- Other unique and personalized resources for improving the quality of life for everyone in Anne Arundel County and creating a more peaceful and productive community by helping people communicate constructively to resolve conflict.
