Summer slide
Summer learning loss or “summer slide” occurs when students return to school in the fall with a decline in academic skills over summer break.
By June, your child (and maybe you too) might need a break from school. However, many parents worry about their child not retaining the knowledge and skills they learned during the school year, experiencing what is called the “summer slide.” These worries are not unfounded. Studies show that children who don’t exercise their brains during summer break can lose valuable, hard-won knowledge and learning skills. According to research:
- Students lose an average of 2 ½ months of math skills and 2 months of reading skills over the summer
- The average student loses 17-34% of the prior year’s learnings over the summer and students who experience this loss one year are those most likely to experience it again in subsequent summers.
- For students who already struggle in school, summer learning loss presents a larger threat to overall achievement.
What can parents do?
Concerned parents should find local summer learning programs that their child will enjoy. Students who participate in summer learning programs enter the following school year with increased confidence. They retain what they know and have a great start in the fall. And, the effects of summer learning programs can endure for at least two years after participation.
Right now summer feels far away but summer camp registrations are in full swing! Summer learning programs – like Camp Summit – that focus on both academics and fun can help prevent summer learning loss.
Camp Summit offers three hours of morning academics followed by afternoon fun and recreation. Camp Summit students are grouped into small classes based on skill level in each subject - reading, writing, and math. Students truly enjoy their time at Camp Summit and many return year after year. Parents report that their students are better prepared for school in the fall and many even learn new skills over the summer.
