Art of Activism Exhibition and Banner Display
January 8th through February 27th; Maryland Hall, Annapolis
Maryland Hall, in partnership with the Banneker Douglass Museum and Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, invited Maryland-based Black artists, whose work encapsulates activism and social justice and using the creative process to educate their audiences about diversity, equity and inclusion to send proposals to take one of six 5 ft. x 9 ft tall Black Lives Matter banners, which were hanging on the front steps of Maryland Hall, to use as a canvas for justice. Selected artists were asked to challenge viewers' perception of art by using their individual banner as a platform to discuss social oppression and systemic patterns through visual or performance art. Artists were commissioned $1,000 to design and create their banners. Find more information here.
The Beauty and Magic of Microscopic Minerals
January 7th, 7 p.m.; Virtual Event
Join Micromounter Hall of Fame 2020 Inductee, Mike Seeds to learn about microminerals and micromounting. Micromineral specimens are typically less than 2 centimeters in size and contain crystals that are commonly less than 1 millimeter in size. At this scale all of the crystals are “euhedral,” or perfectly shaped, and provide a stunning image when viewed under the microscope. Only about 200 of the 5500 known minerals form crystals as large as your thumb. The rest form only microscopic crystals. Microminerals allows for vast numbers of collection specimens but requires very little space. Micromounting is also inexpensive. Dealers sell micromounts for a few dollars each, and micromounters enjoy trading or giving away extra specimens. Micromounting is a hobby for quiet evenings studying rocks, trimming them to size, mounting them safely in little boxes, labeling them, and admiring the beautiful crystals under the microscope.

Historic Annapolis Virtual Lecture: The Present Discontents
January 12th, 7 p.m.; Virtual Event
Two hundred fifty years ago, Annapolis had been Maryland's capital for 75 of the province's 136 years. No one knew it yet, but the countdown was already on to the end of the colonial era, the start of the Revolutionary War, and the rise of an independent American nation. Glenn E. Campbell, Senior Historian of Historic Annapolis, tells the story of Annapolis in 1770, a year when, as William Eddis wrote, "a spirit of discontent and opposition [was] universally predominant in the colonies."
