The BIG health news this week was a proposed class action lawsuit filed in California State court against more than two dozen California wine makers. The suit alleges that companies are knowingly selling wine contaminated with dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic.
The Wine Institute, not surprisingly, disagrees. In a statement they point out that several countries, including the European Union (the original wine makers), have established limits of 100 parts per billion or higher for arsenic in wine. The lawsuit claims levels of 50 parts per million in the listed wines. That’s below the international standard. But that hasn’t stopped the proposed suit—yet.
Most of the ands (visit www.taintedwines.com for the full list as well as the complaint) are very popular, budget-friendly rose, blush, and white wines. Boy, that middle class just can’t catch a eak these days.
