March 31st through April 3rd; Maryland Hall and various locations in Annapolis
The theme for the 2022 Annapolis Film Festival is THE BIG PICTURE, as we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary, taking a look back and forward simultaneously. The Shorts Challenge will also be using the same theme of finding meaningful purpose in exploring past scenarios/relationships/histories to discover how the present and future is impacted. We encourage you to tell your story through that lens, hoping to find “the big picture” in the end. We invite you to explore these possibilities in storytelling by using this focused approach. If you believe your concept fits into this theme, please pitch it to us and let us know how you see the connection to The Big Picture.
Clothing the Enslaved People at Rose Hill Plantation Made and Wore: Virtual Lecture
March 31st, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Virtual Event
Close out Women's History Month with textile historian Dr. Ann Wass. Using the diary of Martha Ogle Forman and other primary sources, Wass explores the garments created and worn by the enslaved at Rose Hill Plantation in northern Maryland during the early-to-mid 19th century. The mistress of Rose Hill, Forman's writing is a rich source of costume and textile information. Spanning the years 1814-1845, the diary includes types of garments worn by the enslaved, notes on seasonal fabrics and garments, and a trend toward the increasing use of commercially manufactured textiles to supplement those produced from plantation-raised fibers—flax, wool, and cotton. This event is brought to you by Riversdale House Museum. Bosom Buddies Charities, a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment and celebrate healing, recently elected its 2021-2022 officers and appointed new board members. The establishment of Bosom Buddies Charities was the fulfillment of a long-time dream of Queen Anne’s County resident Susan Ponchock. After surviving an aggressive breast cancer diagnosis over 26 years ago, she founded Bosom Buddies Charities in 2006 to raise breast cancer awareness and provide diagnostic services to the residents of the Eastern Shore. In the last 15 years, the organization has raised over $2 million in support of her mission. Susan passed away on March 19, 2021. Susan was enormously proud of what Bosom Buddies Charities has accomplished and grateful to all the people who helped her make it a powerful voice in advancing awareness and treatment. Building upon Susan’s legacy, Bosom Buddies Charities will continue to advance her mission to make a difference for this important cause.
